These are made with steel cut or Irish oats, not rolled oats, which take a bit longer to prepare as they are the least processed.

You can prepare the oats days before, if you would like.

They are heart healthy since they are low in saturated fats, also high in fibre.

In my opinion, Veggie burgers aren’t really the same as Veggie patties. That is, when I am purchasing them from the store.  Some try to be meat-like.  Some are lentils and corn and things.  I like both really, but I like to know what to expect.  That way I have an idea what to prepare it with.

Well, these are really good. They are solid and flavourful.

They don’t taste like meat or have a meaty texture nor are they full of seeds and peas.

Either way, they are delicious and because of the beets, look very much like meat.  If you do not eat beef, anyone who sees you preparing these will question you.

How to Make Oatmeal Tofu Patties

INGREDIENTS

Makes 6- 4oz (113g) vegan patties

Prep Time – 30 min

Cook Time – 10 min

  • 2 medium carrots finely grated to make about 1 cup
  • 1 small beet finely grated to make 2 Tbsps
  • 2 Tbsp finely chopped onion
  • ¾ cup (145g) steel cut oats
  • 2 cups (500mL) vegetable or chicken broth, or just water
  • 3 tsp cooking oil of your choice – I use coconut or avocado
  • 8 oz (226g) medium firm tofu, very well drained
  • 2 tsp fancy molasses
  • 1½  Tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika, or regular
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 2 tsp oil to cook the patties

1. Prepare all of your ingredients.

2. The oats can be prepared the day before if you’d like.

3. In a medium saucepan, bring the broth or water to a boil and add the oats.  If using water add ¼ tsp salt. Cook the oats on medium-low for 15-20 mins. stirring occasionally.

4. Remove from heat and set aside.  Refrigerate if making the day before.

5. Peel and finely grate the carrots and beet.

I use a paper towel to hold the beet, or you could wear food safe gloves.  Or wash your hands quickly after and just be a bit pink.  The carrots will make your hands a bit orange as well.

6. Finely process the tofu.  You can use a food processor or just mash with a fork.

7. Add a tsp of oil to a large frying pan on  medium heat.

8. Sauté the onions a minute, then add the other 2 tsp oil,  the carrots, beets, and garlic, slowly cooking and combining.

9. Make a space in the pan and add the sesame seeds to toast for a minute just to bring out the flavours then stir them in with the other herbs and spices

10. Add the soy sauce and molasses to the cooked oats.  Combine.

11. Add the processed tofu and the vegetable mixture.  Mix well.

12. The mixture may be very moist.  Don’t squeeze them out.  However, if there is liquid running out of them, let them drain for a bit.

13. This will depend on how much liquid comes out of your tofu and vegetables.

14. Cut pieces of parchment to place the patties on top, or if you have used one sheet, cut the parchment to separate them.  This way you will be able to flip it individually into the pan and then remove the paper

15. Moisten hands and form into 6 firm patties

16. Preheat flat top grill or frying pan.  Do not try to bbq these!

Don’t crowd the pan, and have a good wide flipping utensil.

17. Cook burgers on med heat 5-6 mins each side.

Remember there is no meat or egg in these so don’t worry about under cooking.  They need to be cooked long enough to make flipping less difficult.

18. Try to flip only once, then remove.

19.Garnish as you like.

Cheese, no cheese.

Bun, no bun.

Tomato, no tomato.

They freeze well, but cook from frozen.  They will release much moisture if you thaw them and will also be more difficult to handle.

Have these with a rose, maybe a white Zinfandel, not the sweet kind.

I like mine with strawberry scented sparkling water.
