Steel cut oats are the least processed in the oatmeal family, and because they contain more fiber and density than their slightly processed counterparts, they take longer to cook.

Being the least of the processed oatmeal oats, this will need more liquid than the other types.

For extra energy you can substitute milk or other milk alternatives.  Just watch the milk and have the heat a bit lower as it is more likely to burn and boil over.

Sometimes when you’re making something, you might as well make enough.  Steel cut oats will reheat well for another day.

Divide cooked oats in microwaveable containers and garnish with dried fruit, maple syrup, hemp, etc. ready to reheat for another time.

If you have a cup leftover  you can make this Oatmeal Bread

How to Cook Steel Cut Oats

INGREDIENTS

Serves 4

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

  • 1 cup steel cut (aka Irish or pinhead) oats
  • 3 cups water
  • ¼ tsp salt
  1. Bring the water and salt to a boil in a pot that is large enough to hold everything that might want to boil over.
  2. Add the oats all at once and give it a stir.
  3. Cook over medium-low for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, add more liquid if needed, but try not to stir continuously or it gets gluey.
  4. Remove from heat and let stand, covered for 5 minutes.

I like it with brown sugar and a bit too much milk
